Welcome to
Neuroverse Community
Welcome to the ‘Neuroverse Community’. Whether you’re neurodivergent/disabled yourself, a family member, an educator, or an ally eager to champion truly inclusive community and education, we warmly welcome you to our space.
Our Mission
Our mission is simple yet transformative: to create an authentically accessible, supportive, and dynamic learning community by and for neurodivergent and disabled people.
We believe educational paradigms should be as innovative and dynamic as the amazing children, young people and families we seek to serve.
Here, we honour the experiences of neurodivergence and disability in all its wonders and challenges and understand that feeling receptive and open to learning and friendship is only possible if you are feeling safe, nurtured and understood.
Children and young people who are members generally do not attend school for lots of different reasons with one common theme: school did not feel safe.
Many in our community have multiple neurodivergent diagnoses or are waiting on formalisation through assessment or may have chosen not to get an official diagnosis at all for now (Autism, PDA, ADHD, dyslexia, Tourette’s/chronic motor/verbal tics, dysgraphia, dyscalculia). Many of us also have one/multiple co-occurring chronic health conditions that we are also managing. Most of our young people have tried school and some have tried attending multiple educational settings, but their support needs/differences/disability were not understood or supported well, often in very distressing ways. Our young people are also teenagers in the main, going through big changes and experiencing a deeper understanding of themselves, their differences and how they relate to others. Many are doing this with an acute experience of school trauma.
It’s a lot to navigate alone for families. That’s why I founded Neuroverse Community.
Our young people do best when their trusted adult is close by to co-regulate them as they begin to feel more self-regulated over time. We understand and respect this as a legitimate sensical next step from their previous experiences in a learning environment. Parent/carers are often an unrecognised and vital ‘translator’ and protector for their child, who relies on their immense and highly specific knowledge and understanding of what is commonly referred too as ‘complex needs’. We understand that preventing the parent/carer from attending creates a barrier that constitutes disability discrimination in our community. A common barrier to neurodivergent and disabled children being able to take part in so many community and learning events.
Our mission is to continue to build and create a highly considered holistic learning and friendship community that feels safe, nurturing, exciting, responsive and reflective. Our wish for our community members is to be able to move from ‘survive to thrive’ at the pace their nervous system requires. It’s for them to enjoy their childhood and adolescence more, and fulfil their right to play, education and emerging independence in its various forms in a way that feels meaningful to them and in a community with people they can relate to, where they feel accepted and understood. Because feeling a sense of authentic belonging is essential for everyone.
